Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel

The colossi of Ramesses II facing the sun

Carved into the mountain by Ramesses II, the two temples of Abu Simbel are among the most impressive monuments in Egypt. Saved from the waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s, they were moved block by block.

Twice a year, the sun reaches deep into the sanctuary to light up the statues of the gods.
